Celebrating the Season Through Tradition

Honoring the Heart of the Holidays

December brings a season filled with light, laughter and cherished traditions. Across cultures and generations, holiday traditions serve as meaningful opportunities for connection, gratitude and togetherness. Where do many of these beloved customs come from, and why do they matter so much?

A Look Back: The Origins of Beloved Traditions

Many holiday traditions we recognize today trace their roots back hundreds of years.

  • Decorating evergreens dates back to ancient winter solstice festivals, when people brought greenery indoors to symbolize hope and renewal during the darkest time of year.
  • Lighting candles and twinkling lights originated as symbols of warmth, guiding loved ones home and celebrating the brighter days to come.
  • Sharing meals and exchanging gifts have long been ways to express love, generosity and community.

These traditions have evolved, but their purpose remains the same: to bring people together in meaningful, joyful ways.

Why Traditions Matter at Solstice

For older adults, traditions can spark meaningful memories, strengthen a sense of belonging and provide opportunities for social connection. Celebrating together can lift spirits, support emotional well-being and create new moments to treasure.

Holiday Traditions at Solstice

At Solstice, we honor both long-held and newly created traditions that bring residents together. Through our activities and events programming, we host community celebrations that often include things like tree decorating and seasonal décor, cookie baking and recipe sharing, holiday music, performances, and sing-alongs, and cultural and spiritual observances, all with a focus on building community.

These gatherings create a warm, welcoming atmosphere where residents can share stories, celebrate personal traditions and enjoy the company of friends.

A Season To Connect

The holidays at Solstice are a time to reflect, celebrate and embrace the moments that bring joy. Through shared traditions, our communities foster connection and a sense of belonging that lasts well beyond the season.
